As a team of former communications and marketing managers, we get what it’s like to have a million things to deliver and not quite enough resource to pull it off. That’s where we come in for the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory’s (NNL) comms team.
NNL is a leading technical authority on nuclear innovation which pushes the boundaries of science. It is the only UK organisation able to provide technical support across the whole nuclear fission industry.
What we did
Since 2018 we’ve worked as an extension of the NNL comms team, taking on projects as simple as proof-reading, through advising on how to communicate about the people strategy, to codifying the organisation’s written tone of voice and editing the annual report to align with that.
Working for a variety of people within the comms team, we support as and when needed with a flexible and expert resource that can respond quickly to short timescales as well as working on medium-term strategic projects.
“It’s brilliant to know we have the Wordsmiths team on hand when we need some extra help. They understand our context and internal pressures and reliably deliver great work and perceptive advice. We see them as a virtual extension of our team, but in a way we can turn off and on when needed.
“Wordsmiths’ insight and expertise are exactly what we need – I don’t hesitate to put them in front of our internal clients. From helping define our tone of voice through to writing award entries and case studies, we know we can rely on the Wordsmiths team to support us through the inevitable resource bottlenecks.”
Our work for NNL has included:
- Codifying the organisation’s tone of voice
- Creating marketing materials for events and NNL’s early careers programmes
- Editing and proofing the annual report and strategic plan
- Creating the internal communications for the people plan
- Editing and applying a new tone of voice to HR documentation
- Proofing a wide range of industry documents
- Writing a new style of job advert
The outcome
NNL’s comms team know they can call on us to work on quick turnaround projects or medium-term strategic ones. We’ve worked on projects which reach many parts of NNL, providing seamless support for when the comms team is at capacity, in turn assisting this technical organisation to continue to support some of the most cutting-edge work in the world.
